The Cold Mill is the major finishing unit for hot-rolled sheet. Value is added by removing the surface scale and cold rolling the steel into a stronger, thinner sheet to meet specific end use requirements. The end result is termed cold rolled sheet.
The Cold Mill is comprised of five major units: the Pickler, the Reduction Mill, the Anneal Furnaces, the Temper Mill and the Slitter. The hot rolled sheet may be processed on one or a combination of these units to meet customer specifications. The Pickler removes the surface oxide (scale) produced during the hot rolling stage. The Reduction Mill significantly reduces the gauge of the steel sheet to achieve the desired mechanical properties and thickness. The sheet is heated in the Anneal Furnaces and processed on the Temper Mill to achieve the desired ductility and surface texture. The Slitter cuts the sheet to customer specifications.
