The World's Most Recycled Material

Steel is the most recycled material in the world.  Easily recovered with magnets, steel is 100% recyclable and can be recycled time and time again without loss of quality. 

Every steelmaking heat at Essar Steel Algoma contains scrap steel.  Through our manufacturing process, we recycle steel for new end-use applications.

Waste management practices at Essar Steel Algoma are designed to reduce, reuse and recycle, with ongoing reductions in the overall volume of material going to landfill.  Of the total amount of by-product materials generated from the integrated steelmaking process, more than 80% are reused or recycled, either internally or through outside consumers.  In 2007, Essar Steel Algoma achieved a net reduction in landfill material by aggressively sourcing innovative alternatives for waste commodities.   Click here for a list of alternative by-product applications.

The LEED Principle

The Canada Green Building Council encourages sustainable green building and development practices through the adoption of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principle.  Essar Steel Algoma supports this principle with the use of post-consumer and post-industrial recycled content in our manufacturing process. Curbing Green House Gas

With its strength and durability, steel can significantly extend product life cycles, ultimately reducing CO₂ emissions in many downstream industries.  For example, over 20 years, a three-megawatt wind turbine can deliver 80 times more energy than is used in its production and maintenance.  The steel can be 100% recycled at the end of its life. ¹
