Here at Essar Steel Algoma Inc, we have a direct interest in advancing and preserving the quality of life in the community in which we live, work and raise our families. This includes believing in opportunity and youth development. We want to give our youth the opportunity to experience a personally and academically rewarding growth opportunity. For this reason, we have created scholarship opportunities with preference for children of Essar Steel Algoma's past and present employees. See below for more information on each of the scholarships we offer.
SCHOLARSHIP OF EXCELLENCE PROGRAM (for Highschool students pursuing College or University)
The 2013 Scholarship of Excellence application form is available here. A reminder that completed applications must be submitted to your high school Guidance Department on or before March 31st, 2013.
Scholarship of Excellence Brochure
- The Essar Steel Scholarship of Distinction is a university tuition scholarship valued at $5000. The scholarship is awarded to up to two students each year and is renewable for the term of their degree, subject to minimum performance requirements
- The Essar Steel Scholarship of Merit is a college tuition scholarship valued at $3000. The scholarship is awarded to up to two students each year and is renewable for the term of their diploma, subject to minimum performance requirements.
INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS (for students already enrolled in College or University)
These scholarships are administered at the school level. Please contact the school directly.
- Sault College: Essar Steel Algoma Award of Excellence is awarded to 2nd or 3rd year full-time students of Sault College enrolled in a technical trades, engineering technology, or computer studies. Recipient's are selected by the Scholarship, Bursary, and Awards Committee. First consideration is given to a child, grandchild, or ward of a current employee or retiree. Second Consideration is given to a graduate of a secondary school in the Algoma district.
- Algoma University: The Essar Steel Algoma Student Assistance Award, endowed with a donation from Essar Steel Algoma Inc., and given annually to an Algoma University student enrolled in full-time studies in business, computer science or chemistry, in good academic standing and with demonstrated financial need. First consideration for this award will be given to a child, grandchild or legal ward of a current employee or retiree of Essar Steel Algoma Inc. Second consideration will be given to a student who is a graduate of a secondary school in the Algoma region of Ontario. Recipients of this award will have demonstrated an open and respectful attitude, maturity, entrepreneurial ability, accountability and a willingness to participate in community life.
Northern Ontario School of Medicine: The Essar Steel Algoma Bursary- Essar Steel Algoma established this bursary to benefit a full time student of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The recipient must be enrolled full time in any year of the School of Medicine; the recipient must demonstrate financial need; the recipient must be from the geographic area of Sault Ste. Marie including Wawa and Thessalon. The recipient must be a resident of a northern, rural, or remote community.
